Intermittent service outages as we re-provision the Foundry NetIron backbone routers.

Details:
When the current KanREN backbone was originally built we had intended to have two separate networks flowing over the same infrastructure; one for commodity Internet service and one for I2, KanREN sites, and other privately peered networks. This separation became less of an issue once the backbone was rolled out and the “Everything Else” network was dropped.

In order to enable advanced MPLS features, KanREN needs to remove the point-to-point VLANS from the backbone. This will require ~10mins of work in each NetIron. Thanks to the redundant links around the ring any service impact will be minimal. Only the kr-wsu <-> kr-esu link will experience any had downtime (approximately 5mins while the router reboots).

The tentative Schedule is as follows:

Please Note: We will NOT be working on the kr-ku <-> kr-kumc backbone segment due to added complexity and additional transport VLANs.

This window will NOT impact how each university connects to KanREN, only how our backbone ring devices connect with one another.

Cox needs to re-sync the timing on one of their ONS cards. This process can result in ~50ms of downtime on the link. If OSPF is trying to update during that period, it may take a couple minutes to rebuild neighbors and complete the “flooding” process.

KanREN needs to perform a number of updates and configuration changes as part of this maintenance window. We are:
1) Upgrading software from 3.3.0 to 3.5
2) Changing TCAM profiles to allow for more route entries now that the I1 VRF is not being used
3) Enabling enhanced QoS features

The plan is to perform the changes on kr-ku the first night/morning and evaluate the process. If everything goes well, we will perform the changes and upgrade on all the other backbone routers Wednesday morning. Here is a preliminary schedule:

While the routers will be fully reloaded by that time, our route advertisements will likely get damped by external networks. In other words: connectivity may take until 01:00 to fully stabilize in relation to Wednesday morning’s maintenance.

The Foundry NetIron XMR 4000 router at KU (kr-ku) needs to be rebooted to remove some portions of configuration remaining from the former OC-12 to GPN. Expected downtime is only 3-5mins (the NetIrons boot extremely quickly).
